By the end of 2014, Joani and I had taken five trips abroad in five years. By some people standards that might be normal, but by ours it was unbelievable.
The CEO (Joani) and CFO ( coincidently also Joani ) had decided that this year we would stay within the continent. Traveling all over the world is somewhat expensive and our money tree in the garden was drying up so our holidays for 2015 would be centered around North America.
We planned a trip to Chicago in the summer and a trip to New York in the fall.
First Chicago. The Chicago bean (Cloud gate is the proper name) is quite cool,
and If you haven't already figured it out, Joani and I love art, so the Art Institute of Chicago would be a central part of the trip
Van Gogh again
Toulouse Latrec
and while I have a hard time admitting it, My favourite painting, not Van Gogh, but Georges Seurat.
We were excited to see Wrigley field but didn't take time to catch a game.
More for sports fans
and the Chicago waterfront.
Besides that we would play it by ear. Joani made a new friend.
Although he did seem to be a bit tired.
We had a fun day of Freebies, completely by coincidence. First, we saw that there was to be a Damien Rice concert in Grant Park, so we went to buy lawn tickets. While we waited in line someone called out that he had free lawn tickets if anyone wanted them. We waited for a moment to see if anyone else would take them, but when no-one spoke up we grabbed them. Joani persuaded the guy to take $5.00. Then we went to a bakery that had been recommended by Joani's son for tea and snacks. Joani ordered a lemon square, and after they apologized that they were out of lemon squares, they offered Joani her choice of dessert at no cost. When we went for dinner before the concert, we found a nice looking sushi restaurant and went in. The server got our order mixed up, which wasn't a big deal, but the owner came and apologized, explaining that they had just opened the day before and were still training staff. He insisted on giving us green tea ice cream for dessert at no charge.
We had a marvelous trip to Chicago, and will have to go back as we didn't have time to do a walking tour of houses designed by my favourite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright
